As três origens do mal.
.
Religion is the cause of all evil. – that is what atheists use to claim. (And they do it now more and louder because of the killing inside the Charlie Hedbo’s news office in Paris.)
It is not true, and that is actually very easy to show. Hitler, or Stalin followed no religion, just to mention two of the most cruel mass killers of all times.
The love of money is the root of all evil. – that is what Christians use to say, quoting 1 Timothy 6:10.
Greed is, indeed, a broader concept, and it is cross-cutting in society. It does explain much of the evil perpetrated in the world today. But not all. Greed, as any Christian knows, is only one of the seven causes of physical and spiritual death. The other six being: pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger and sloth. And it is not even the one that seems to have caused all the others, which is pride, the sin that originated the fall of Lucifer, the angel of light.
The love of money does not explain, for example, most revenge acts, or any other passion induced evil actions. And you will agree that it is certainly not the love of money that causes a man to tie explosives to his body and makes himself explode and kill those who happen to be near him.
Stupidity is the source of all evil. – that’s what most scholars will say, translating a famous sentence of Cicero. And they are so convinced of this truth that some of them actually wrote thesis and books to prove it.
In his book A Short Introduction to the History of Stupidity (that some consider to be the first in English on the subject), Walter B. Pitkin writes in 1932 the following: “Stupidity can easily be proved the supreme Social Evil.”; in her book Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil, Hannah Arendt introduces the expression and concept of “the banality of evil”, meaning that she considered that Eichmann’s anti-Semitism, and responsibility for his actions, were secondary to his stupidity (The extraordinary thing about this conclusion is that Arendt was a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany.); finally, in his essay The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity, Carlo Cipolla enunciates (in the fifth law) that “a stupid person is the most dangerous kind of person” because this person “causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses.” (in the third law).
No matter how “scientific” this may appear, it is not true. Unfortunately, very intelligent evil people exist and they usually cause enormous harm to others because they are normally very powerful. This is one of those things everyone has heard talk about but few had a real encounter with one of these persons, because they hide behind others. (An expression was actually created in the 17th century to name this kind of very powerful people that operates behind the scene: éminence grise, the French for grey eminence.) I know for sure that they exist, and their evilness is great, and here I’m going to share with you of my own personal experience.
I was in my twenties and I had just concluded with excellency my master’s thesis after a professional probation period of four and a half years. Still, I could not get a job. And I complained a lot. One of my social relationships at that time offered to get me an appointment with this very rich and powerful person that she happened to know. I accepted. (And here starts the creepy part.) The night before the meeting I had this most strange dream (I should call it a nightmare). I was seating before an old man at a huge desk inside an office in a basement. The man spoke and said very clearly that he would give me what I wanted but in return I had to give him my soul. (For those of you that are not really impressed yet, let me tell you that at the time I considered myself an agnostic, I had never attend any church and I did not know the Bible.)
The next day I went to the appointment. …
Would you like to know the end of this personal story? Much more important, would you like to know the single episode of Jesus’ life, in just a few verses on the Bible, which shows clearly the three causes of all evil? Invite me to speak at your meeting (group, community, congregation, conference, symposium, …). To find my email address just click on my profile (top right) under the title “O Itinerante Jardineiro”.

As três origens do mal.
E queixava-me muito disso. Eu aceitei. (E aqui começa a parte arrepiante.)
No dia seguinte lá fui à entrevista. …
