If I show you this sheet music, those of you that can actually read music may have an idea of how it sounds the song written on it, but even those will not be able to imagine the performance shown on the video put down here.

The same happens with the Word of God. One can read it, and meditate on it, but the Word only comes alive when it is spoken.

O mesmo acontece com a palavra de Deus. Pode ler-se, meditar-se nela, mas a Palavra só fica viva quando é falada.

The church of Jesus or the church of the apostles?

A Igreja de Jesus ou a Igreja dos apóstolos? (pode ler este texto em português mais abaixo)

Preliminary note

Before going through this discussion and to avoid misinterpretation, let me make it perfectly clear that I firmly believe that all the words in the Bible come from God, that it is the Word of God as some of you would say.
However, the word of God can be (and is) sometimes misused, abused, used with bad intentions. Anyone that reads through one of the passages commonly entitled ‘the temptations of Jesus’ – Matthew 4: 6 or Luke 4: 9-10 – cannot doubt that the devil himself knows (and can use) the words of the Book with evil intentions.
Can one avoid this? How can one be reassured that the enemy is not using the Word that comes to him? (Please, understand that it is not my desire to start a theological discussion but simply to let you know what I usually do in such circumstances – and I am quite sure that other people will do it some other way.)
Simply go to Jesus. Search in the Gospels, through the words (and deeds) of Jesus, confirmation of that particular word. If one can find it, the word given to him is most certainly intended for good (even if it is a word that causes discomfort). If not… keep it in mind and, in time, the Holy Spirit will reveal the truth about it.

The church of the apostles

The church of apostles is the hierarchical, pyramidal shaped organization we have today (in most cases). The extreme example of this structure is the Roman Catholic Church (fig.1), yet most big churches end up following the same model (fig.2) – which is the corporation model used by almost all big companies (fig.3). The church of the apostles is the church of men.

As you can see, is a top down (chandelier shaped) structure headed by one leader, a human leader placed on the top (fig.4), that overrules (theoretically, at least) the whole organisation. It is a church that can only grow down at the cost of being a heavier and heavier structure (fig.5).

You may ask: but is it not biblically based? Well, yes, it is the church which Luke describes in Acts 6: 1-7;

1 In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 3 Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”
5 This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 6 They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.
7 So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith.

(A parenthesis here. If you continue reading through Acts 6 and 7 you will read the story of Stephens martyrdom, taken to be the first in the history of the church of Christ. The question to be raised is: Could there be a connection between these two events? And what about the statement of the Twelve: “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. …”? Is it not filled with arrogance? Were not the apostles appropriating the Word? As I told you before, I am not trying to start a theological discussion; I am just raising (what seem to be) relevant questions. Because relevant questions are the way to understanding, and understanding is a condition of true knowledge.)

A igreja de Jesus ou a igreja dos apóstolos?

Nota prévia

Antes de passar ao tema da presente argumentação, e para evitar mal-entendidos, quero deixar perfeitamente claro que eu acredito firmemente que toda a Palavra que está na Bíblia veio de Deus, é a Palavra de Deus como alguns de vós dirieis.
Contudo, essa Palavra pode ser (e tem sido) algumas vezes mal usada, abusada, usada com más intenções. Qualquer pessoa que leia uma das passagens usualmente intituladas “As tentações de Jesus” – Mateus 4: 6 ou Lucas 4: 9-10 – não pode duvidar que o próprio diabo sabe (e pode usar) passagens do Livro com más intenções.
Pode isto ser evitado? Como pode alguém assegurar-se que o inimigo não está a usar a Palavra que veio até si? (Por favor, entendam que não é minha intenção iniciar uma discussão teológica mas simplesmente partilhar convosco o que usualmente faço nestas circunstâncias – e, estou certo que outras pessoas o farão de outra maneira.)
Simplesmente, ide a Jesus. Procurai nos Evangelhos por entre as palavras (e acções) de Jesus a confirmação dessa palavra em particular. Se encontrar, a palavra que foi dada a essa pessoa é com certeza bem intencionada (mesmo que seja uma palavra que cause desconforto). Se não… guarde-se na memória e, a seu tempo, o Espírito Santo revelará a verdade sobre essa palavra.

A igreja dos apóstolos

A igreja dos apóstolos é a organização hierárquica, em forma de pirâmide, que existe actualmente (na maioria dos casos). O exemplo extremo deste tipo de estrutura é a Igreja Católica Romana (fig.1), ainda que quase todas as grandes igrejas acabem por seguir o mesmo modelo (fig.2) – que é a estrutura corporativa usada por quase todas as grandes empresas (fig.3). A igreja dos apóstolos é a igreja dos homens.

Como pode ver-se, é uma estrutura de cima para baixo (em forma de candelabro) encabeçada por um líder, um líder humano posicionado no topo (fig.4), o qual manda (teoricamente, pelo menos) sobre toda a organização. É uma igreja que só pode crescer para baixo à custa de se tornar uma estrutra cada vez mais pesada (fig.5).

Podeis perguntar: mas não é biblicamente fundamentada? Bom, sim, é a igreja que Lucas descreve em Actos 6: 1-7;

7 A palavra de Deus ia-se espalhando cada vez mais; o número dos discípulos aumentava consideravelmente em Jerusalém, e grande número de sacerdotes obedeciam à Fé.

(Aqui um parêntese. Se continuarmos a ler por Actos 6 e 7 leremos a história do martírio de Estêvão, tido como o primeiro da história da igreja de Cristo. A questão que deve colocar-se é: Poderá existir uma ligação entre estes acontecimentos? E o que dizer da declaração dos Doze: “«Não convém deixarmos a palavra de Deus, para servirmos às mesas. …”? Não é cheia de arrogância? Não estavam os apóstolos a apropriar-se da Palavra? Como já referi antes, não tenho intenção de iniciar uma discussão teológica; estou apenas a levantar (o que me parecem ser) questões importantes. Porque as questões relevantes são o caminho para o entendimento, e o entendimento é a condição para o conhecimento verdadeiro.)
