**“Por um país mais pobre” (For a poorer country)

Traduções impedidas de livros proibidos. / Precluded translations of banned books.

Poucas pessoas saberão que livros como Alice no País das Maravilhas (Lewis Carroll), O Diário de Anne Frank, As vinhas da Ira (John Steibeck) ou Bichos (Colectânea de contos, Miguel Torga) estiveram proibidos num qualquer país durante algum (mais ou menos) tempo.
Para comemorar a Semana dos Livros Proibidos* publico aqui o pequeno poema To the Garden the World, do livro Leaves of Grass de Walt Whitman (um livro que também esteve proibido) e a minha tradução dele para um trabalho que foi cancelado (mais um) por falta de verba.

Few people will know that books like Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (Lewis Carroll), The Diary of Anne Frank, The Grapes of Wrath (John Steinbeck) or Farrusco the blackbird: and other stories from the Portuguese (Miguel Torga) were once banned in some country for some (more or less) time.
To commemorate the Banned Books Week I publish here the small poem To the Garden the World from the book Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman (a book that was once also banned), and my translation of it to Portuguese as part of a commission that has been canceled (one more) because of withdrawal on funding.

To the Garden the World

To the garden the world anew ascending,
Potent mates, daughters, sons, preluding,
The love, the life of their bodies, meaning and being,
Curious here behold my resurrection after slumber,
The revolving cycles in their wide sweep having brought me again,
Amorous, mature, all beautiful to me, all wondrous,
My limbs and the quivering fire that ever plays through them, for
reasons, most wondrous,
Existing I peer and penetrate still,
Content with the present, content with the past,
By my side or back of me Eve following,
Or in front, and I following her just the same.

*A expressão inglesa banned books tem sido traduzida para português como livros censurados, o que na minha modesta opinião é um erro pois em nenhum dicionário (antigo ou moderno) foi encontrada a palavra “censurar” com o significado (mesmo que informal ou figurado) da palavra ban. Muitos livros (e filmes) foram, e são ainda hoje, censurados e mesmo assim publicados, ainda que estropiados.
